The Benchmarking Project Team has developed measures for the food industry to enable benchmarking of performance in managing allergens and associated community issues. Changes to the food regulatory environment in December 2002 have resulted in the food industry investing heavily to implement the changes and manage ongoing food allergen issues. Without the means to determine or measure improvements or outcomes brought about as a result of this focus by the food industry, it is difficult to assess any level of success in relation to the investment. Despite minimal hard data regarding management of allergens being held by industry, the Benchmarking Project Group have collated the information available from regulatory authorities, testing laboratories and consumer groups. This information has been collected in a standardised way to enable benchmarking of company and industry performance. On-going collection of this data will allow tracking of trends and provide direction for further work and cost allocation for industry.
