During the Australian Coeliac Awareness Week, from 13-20 March 2009, The Coeliac Society and the Coeliac Research Fund jointly launched a new campaign called: ‘Is your MOJO missing?’ aiming to improve public knowledge and dramatically improve diagnosis rates of coeliac disease in Australia.
The MOJO message states that if you suffer from coeliac symptoms such as unexplained tiredness, bloating, diarrhoea and/or constipation:
Make an appointment with your doctor
Organise coeliac tests
Judge the results with your doctor
Omit gluten from your diet if your doctor advises it.
The Coeliac Society maintains that while coeliac disease is one of the most common hereditary autoimmune diseases in the world, it remains one of the most under-diagnosed conditions of our time, with the average age of diagnosis being 40 years old. Although most coeliacs can live a healthy, pain free, active life through following a strict gluten free diet, if left untreated coeliac symptoms can lead to sufferers becoming housebound and unable to participate in normal, everyday activities.
Raising awareness is a year round project for The Coeliac Society, although a concentrated effort is undertaken during Coeliac Awareness Week. This year, the Coeliac Research Fund and the Australian Coeliac Society have combined forces for a joint Coeliac Awareness Campaign.
