It pays to cater for food allergies

AllergyEats is an on-line directory of ‘allergy-friendly’ restaurants across the United States that have been rated by people with food allergies. AllergyEats founder Paul Antico has published his latest estimation of the financial value of catering to the food allergy community.
Using conservative assumptions, he believes that catering to the food allergic dining community translates to a 9% or greater potential increase in business for an allergy-friendly restaurant over one that does not specifically cater for food allergic individuals. This number does not take into consideration the potentially large number of non-allergic people who would also be eating at the allergy-friendly restaurant as part of a dining party that includes someone with an allergy.
Feedback obtained via the AllergyEats website indicates that if a restaurant does not have appropriate food allergy protocols in place to cater for the food allergic consumer, these individuals and the parties they are dining with will take their business elsewhere.
