Intestinal injury caused by gluten in non-coeliacs

Dr Evan Newnham, a gastroenterologist based in Melbourne, Australia, has conducted a literature review to find evidence for the effect of gluten on gastrointestinal symptoms in people who do not have coeliac disease.

His review findings indicate that non-coeliac gluten intolerance does exist, although there are limitations to those interventional studies that have been published to-date. Therefore, Dr Newnham suggests more research is required to identify issues of the dose of gluten needed to promote adverse symptoms, and mechanisms of action.
