Faster, effective milk desensitisation treatment

A small study on milk allergic patients at Stanford University School of Medicine and the Boston Children’s Hospital has shown desensitisation therapy that includes the allergy drug omalizumab can increase a patient’s tolerance to milk within a shorter time frame.

At the end of the initial 7-10 week treatment period, most of the 11 children participating in the study could consume almost a whole glass of milk without suffering allergic symptoms.

The researchers presented their findings at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology in San Francisco in March 2011. Based on the results of this study, they are launching a new trial focused on peanut allergy.
