Cereal protein allergy and atopic dermatitis

Children with atopic dermatitis are frequently sensitised to cereal allergens. In a group of 61 children with atopic dermatitis 43% were determined to be sensitised to cereal allergens using skin prick analysis. The most common was allergy to proteins of wheat and rye.

While there was no relationship between the occurrence of sensitisation to these allergens and the severity of skin lesions, the authors suggest that in the case of proven cereal protein allergy and severe atopic dermatitis, an elimination diet should be considered.
