Allergen-free diet can help atopic dermatitis

A three-year prospective study of 100 French children with food-related severe atopic dermatitis has demonstrated the benefit of a diet free from the implicated food. The authors believe food elimination diets are not utilised enough in the management of atopic dermatitis.
The study recruited children with severe atopic dermatitis and suspected food allergy. Their food allergy was confirmed by double-blind placebo-controlled food challenges. Results showed that dietary avoidance of the offending foods led to low levels of IgE in all patients and an 85% reduction in the amount of applied corticosteroids.
