Inaugural PQLPY Prize awarded

The PQLPY Prize is a new award established by the Coeliac Research Fund in Australia. Recipients of the prize will be recognised for their significant contribution in the field of coeliac disease awareness, diagnosis or research.

More genetic markers of coeliac disease found

Coeliac disease is known to run in families and previous research has identified certain genes that influence its development. Further work conducted by a large, international team of researchers has recently identified another four types of disturbance in the genes controlling the immune system which increase a person’s risk of developing coeliac disease.

Reducing shrimp allergenicity

A study published in the Journal of Food Science has found that boiling shrimps for ten minutes may cut down the levels of the allergen tropomyosin. The study also found the thermal stability of tropomyosin purified from boiled shrimp was the same as that of tropomyosin purified from raw shrimp.
