Food allergy and atopic dermatitis connection

Early food sensitization has been found to be significantly associated with atopic dermatitis, and co-existent food allergy and atopic dermatitis affects children more often than adults. The development of early sensitization to allergens following direct skin exposure appears to be facilitated by functional defects in the skin’s outer layer.

Parents underestimate allergic child’s burden

In a recent survey of health-related quality of life, among parent-child pairs in the Netherlands, children reported significantly greater impact of their food allergy on their health-related quality of life than their parents did. At the same time, the perceptions of disease severity reported by both parents and children were nearly identical.

Children with cow’s milk allergy can consume camel milk instead

Thirty-five children with confirmed allergy to cow’s milk were tested to determine whether they could safely consume camel's milk as an alternative. Twenty percent had positive skin prick test results to camel's milk while 80% were negative to camel's milk and were able to consume camel's milk without any adverse reactions.

New buckwheat allergen test

Reading Scientific Services Ltd (RSSL) in the UK has validated a new test for detecting buckwheat protein in food products. The ELISA method has been validated in several matrices including potato, maize and wheat flour, biscuits, cakes, sunflower oil and several highly acidic and salty products.
