The gut’s role in food allergy

In normal circumstances, the mucosal membrane of the gut, in addition to digestion mechanisms and other immunologic factors, provide defence against food antigens. A recent review has looked at research into the role of the gastrointestinal tract in the development of tolerance to allergenic foods.

Review of food allergy immunotherapy data

Globally, the development of methods to treat food allergy currently has a strong focus on oral immunotherapy. Allergy researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine have reviewed evidence on food oral immunotherapy and believe the preliminary data are encouraging.

Companies fined for undeclared peanuts

The NSW importer and the distributor of a Chinese gingili (sesame) paste that contained undeclared peanuts have been fined $2,640 and $6,600 respectively under the NSW Food Act after it was found they had falsely labelled the food. The case was brought to the attention of the NSW Food Authority after a peanut-allergic South Australian man was treated for anaphylaxis after consuming the product.

Canada to start peanut immunotherapy trials

Following the promising results of peanut oral immunotherapy trials conducted in the UK and USA, McMaster University and Dalhousie University in Canada have announced their plans to conduct similar research relevant to the Canadian demographic.
