Review of articles published in Clinical and Experimental Allergy
A group of allergy experts including several Australian specialists have reviewed over 200 articles published in the journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy throughout 2010, and provided a summary of key messages.
A number of studies investigating new therapies for allergy were published throughout the year. Therapeutic properties of various plants and herbs have also been studied by many groups, especially from a mechanistic perspective. However, the review authors believe there have been too few high quality clinical trials involving possible new therapies.
The impact on allergies of probiotics and prebiotics, plus the combination of both – synbiotics, were studied extensively in studies published in the journal. However, findings are not conclusive and this field remains both controversial and complicated. Genome Wide Association Studies and gene-environment interactions were also the focus of publications in 2010.
