Proficiency tests for allergen detection
The Food Analysis Performance Assessment Scheme (FAPAS) is organised by the Proficiency Testing Group at Central Science Laboratory (CSL) in the UK. Since they first began offering proficiency testing for allergen analysis 7 years ago, FAPAS have conducted more than 40 allergen testing rounds. During this time, they have developed and improved the methods used and have worked to optimise the means of comparing allergen test results between different laboratories. A description of the challenges they have encountered and the progress they have made has recently been published.
Participants in a proficiency test are encouraged to use the method of their choice to obtain a qualitative or quantitative result for the analyte in question. The results submitted by all participants are collated to derive the best estimate of the 'true' level of the analyte. In establishing their proficiency testing service for allergens FAPAS found that quantitative results appear to be dependent on the brand of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit used, the specific analyte targeted and the limit of detection achievable.
The paper presents two case studies which highlight some of the issues around the use of allergen measurement methods.
